The WTR which is hosted by Stanford Lake College made its debut in 2014 and has become a bucket-list event for those who enjoy serious trail. The event evolved with many additions and changes over the next few years, but in 2023 the decision was made to take it back its roots, rebuilding the event on some its most loved foundations. For the 2025 edition we are evolving once more with some new additions.
This year the signature 65km 2-day Wolkberg Trail Run, consists of a 42km run on Day 1, with over 1950m of climbing that includes summiting the highest point in Limpopo, The Iron Crown; followed by a faster, slightly flatter 23km on Day 2. It takes place through the magnificent and almost untouched Wolkberg mountain range and indigenous forests in the Magoebaskloof region of Limpopo.
A new addition to the block is the 42km Mountain Marathon as a one-day option on the Saturday with its own prize giving and finish line race village including food and beverage stalls, to bring the vibe.
The second day only options still include entering a 25km or a very scenic 10km race, with hearty food and beverages and a festive race village at the finish line. Another new addition is a 5km fun-run on this day, no prizes, no timing, just a fun marked and supported 5km trail.
This day is therefore perfect for the whole family, with plenty of activities, great food and drinks, and three runs to choose from to keep everybody entertained.
