Don't miss this event: Five blues greats together on stage at Arena Theater, celebrating Mark Hummel's “James Cotton Tribute," featuring Steve Freund, Aki Kumar, Randy Bermudes & June Core.” This fabulous show will conclude Blues on the Coast 2025.
Grammy nominee and two-time Blues Music Award winner Mark Hummel is recognized as one of the leading blues harmonica players of his generation. He has produced The Blues Harmonica Blowouts (John Mayall, Charlie Musselwhite, Huey Lewis, Lee Oskar, Magic Dick) for 30 years and featured the late James Cotton on seven national tours as part of that event.
Joining him is San Jose–based harmonica player Aki Kumar, who blends blues with elements of Indian music. Kumar has appeared at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, been featured on PRI’s The World, and toured internationally.
Blues guitarist Steve Freund, noted by Rolling Stone for his “masterful, no-nonsense guitar work,” began his career in Chicago alongside blues greats and later spent nine years with harmonica legend James Cotton.
The rhythm section features Randy Bermudes (bass) and June Core (drums), longtime members of Charlie Musselwhite’s band with extensive credits performing and touring across the blues scene. They have frequently collaborated with James Cotton, Mark Hummel, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, and Aki Kumar.
