This is the first of a series of workshops I'll be running with Paul from The Cunning Grove on the mythology of descent to the underworld or otherworld.
Who is the workshop for?
Anyone with an interest in ancient mythology and religion who is interested in how these might inform our spiritual lives today.
What will be covered?
• Background information about Sumer, Babylon and Assyria
• Detailed overview of religious practices in Mesopotamia as evidenced by cuneiform tablets and archaeology
• Assessment of the sources for the myth
o Cuneiform texts, their discovery, translation and reception
o Imagery on works of art and archaeological evidence
• Detailed retelling of the best-evidenced versions of the myth
• Inanna Ishtar since Assyro-Babylonia
o The impact of the myth on other cultures
o Versions of the myth in the Greco-Roman world
o How the myth has been interpreted in the modern world
Psychoanalytically
Various anthropological viewpoints
• Which aspects of the myth might speak to us today
• Spiritual practices and rituals that we could implement inspired by Inanna’s story
