Our theme, “Resilience in these Challenging Times,” continues with Sharon Lukert presenting a talk titled “Meditation, Resilience, and Cognitive Decline” at our Unitarian Universalist Sunday Service in the Guild Hall at Wesley United Methodist Church on February 15 at 10 a.m.
Sharon Lukert brings a Buddhist perspective to meditation based on teachings by Pema Chödrön and from her experiences at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. To become a Buddhist chaplain in 2001, Sharon Lukert completed a year-long training in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with a course on death and dying counseling with Frank Ostaseski through the San Francisco Zen Hospice Project and then worked as a hospice chaplain in multiple settings. In 2009, Lukert received more CPE training to become the Associate Educator at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She retired in 2021 and was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment.
Drawing from her recent book, Until My Memory Fails Me: Cultivating Emotional Resilience and Self-Compassion in the Face of Cognitive Decline, Sharon Lukert will discuss the intersection of meditation practice with emotional and spiritual resilience for coping with real world concerns surrounding cognitive decline. to provide stories, information, and practices for maintaining a positive quality of life as cognition changes. “My ultimate aspiration is to inspire a sense of personal meaning and purpose and encourage each of you who are joining me on this journey to embrace this life-changing disease with as much ease and grace as possible” says Lukert.
