Lisa Werder-Brown, Executive Director of the Watersheds of South Pittsburgh (WoSP)will lead us on a tour of two or three completed/planned locations of high impact stormwater management sites in the Saw Mill Run Watershed, which has been plagued for decades by water problems including flooding, basement sewer backups, and impaired stream water quality. Stops we’ll likely make include:
Wabash Park – This West End Neighborhood park has great future potential for innovative projects to both manage stormwater and serve as an amenity to the community. Hear what’s in the Saw Mill Run Master Site Development Plan for this location.
Ansonia Place – A former residential neighborhood in Overbrook that was repeatedly flooded. The City of Pittsburgh became the owner about 20 years ago via a FEMA buyout. This site is one of the top priority project sites in the Saw Mill Run Master Site Development Plan that will help manage stormwater and improve water quality. WoSP, the City, and other partners are working together to see what is possible here!
Moore Park Stream Restoration- This joint project of PennDOT and Pittsburgh Water was recently completed in 2025 in the Brookline Neighborhood to help meet regulatory water quality requirements. The project includes rain gardens, stream channel restoration, and floodplain grading. See what a newly completed stream restoration project looks like, and plan to visit again in the future to see how the vegetation fills in to enhance its natural beauty and stormwater management! https://www.pgh2o.com/projects-maintenance/search-all-projects/moore-park-vannucci-field-stormwater-partnership .
