Speak Up to Protect Pittsburgh’s Forests!
The city’s Planning Department recently published their recommendations for expanding our Greenways, giving citizens a unique opportunity to speak up for protecting Pittsburgh’s forest habitats. The proposal would expand existing Greenways, consolidating borders and improving habitat connectivity between “islands.” This proposal also lays the foundation for establishing new forests in neighborhoods that currently don’t have much urban forest, thereby addressing a key climate justice problem.
The proposal can be reviewed online at the city’s Engage Page (at the link below), where you will find the map showing their recommended additions to the system. You can click on the map and comment on a particular lot or area, either choosing an existing point or creating your own. There is also a survey you can fill out below the map. The Department of Planning will continue the public involvement process through the remainder of Mayor Ed Gainey’s term, which ends in early January. This is our opportunity to impress the new mayor that the people of Pittsburgh love forests and want to see them protected.
Join us at 6:00PM for a Happy Hour presentation and teach-in with Matt Peters, Hazelwood resident and administrative coordinator for Heartwood, and Kara Kukovich, Conservation Chair with the Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club, followed by a letter-writing party!
Thanks to the folks at Hazel Grove Brewing for having us, and thanks to City Girls Who Walk for help organizing this event!
