WALKING EVENT
Join us for a special one-time hike!
Ross Carkeet is a popular local naturalist and former Columbia College professor. His 39-year career took him from teaching biology and forestry to being a certified forester and a field lecturer.
Ross is leading a walking event for Blue Zones Project on October 11, a Saturday morning hike.
This is a six mile round trip hike from Beardsley Reservoir Dam down the historic Sugar Pine Railroad grade to the historic inclined tramway site above the Spring Gap Powerhouse on the Middle Fork Stanislaus River. The hike affords views into the rugged river canyon, passage through the “peeled onion” granitic wall portion of the railroad grade, and a close look at an historic steam donkey engine used during the early 1900’s logging in the area.
The turnoff to Beardsley Reservoir is located off Hwy. 108 to the left approximately 3-4 miles east of Pinecrest. From the highway to the dam where we park is approximately 5 miles.
Meet at the dam parking area on the south side of the river at 9 am and bring a lunch, water, hat and comfortable hiking footwear. The RR grade is basically level and hikers can return to their vehicles at any time. We will return by 4 pm.
Please carpool if possible.
Space is limited to 25 people in the group. Please RSVP.
