Get ready to learn the ropes of fishing with an expert! Join your Outdoor Afro network on Saturday, August 30, 2025, for a special introductory fishing program guided by Mindy Shumate, a Park Interpreter at Ray Roberts Lake State Park.

This 1.5-hour class is perfect for anyone interested in fishing, whether you’ve never held a pole or just want a refresher. Mindy will start with a quick introduction to fish ecology and handling, then teach you how to properly use fishing gear. After the lesson, put our new skills into action!
Fishing poles will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
Here are the details for our fishing class:
• Date & Time: Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Please give yourself time to arrive at the park and navigate to our meeting location.
• Location: Ray Roberts Lake State Park - Isle du Bois unit. Please meet at the Fishing Pier Parking Lot.
• Directions to the Pier: The fishing pier is a 5 to 8-minute drive from the park entrance. You will stay straight until you hit the stop sign at the T by the “Day Use” area. Turn left, and you will see the White Texas Parks and Wildlife Escape Truck parked near the fishing pier parking lot.
• Difficulty Level: Easy. This program is a gentle introduction and is suitable for all skill levels.
• What to Bring:
o Bait! You will need to bring your own bait for this program. Mindy recommends worms, which are available at the local "Dam Store" gas station on the west side of the dam. Other alternatives you can bring include hot dogs, canned corn, or minnows.
o Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
o Sun protection, including sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
o Plenty of water and snacks.
• Capacity: Limited to 8 participants.
• Important Note: A Texas fishing license is NOT required for fishing from the pier within a state park.
