Introduction to Conservation in Upstate South Carolina Course
An in-depth, nature-based experiential learning opportunity at Farm in the Wildwood

See the Upstate SC through new eyes in this Intro to Conservation Course led by expert instructor Blake Berry. This experiential learning will take place in the diverse areas of Farm in the Wildwood as well as visual classroom presentation.

Class 1: Understanding Soil and Its Importance | Sept 20 1:00-3:00
Class 2: Watersheds and Water Conservation | Sept 27 1:00-3:00
Class 3: Class 3: Wildlife and Plant Life Conservation | Oct 4 1:00-3:00

This class is led by Blake Berry, local agriculture instructor who has inspired countless members of our community with knowledge in horticultural, conservation and agricultural concepts. Farm in the Wildwood is thrilled to have such a talented instructor providing experiential learning opportunities for our community here at our farm.

Details:
Duration: Approximately 2-2.5 hours
Includes a guided discovery walk. Must be walking for a period of 1-1.5 hours on uneven terrain.
What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, a notebook, and curiosity!
Children must be accompanied by adult.


Class 1: Understanding Soil and Its Importance
Be prepared to be amazed by the soil beneath your feet. We are probably biased, but after this class, we think you’ll agree just how inspiring and helpful that a class on soil can be. This class includes a discovery walk at Farm in the Wildwood to demonstrate and enhance concepts learned in class.

Introduction to Soil Science: You’ll learn about the composition, types, and functions of soil as well as the role of soil in supporting plant life and maintaining ecosystem health.
Soil Conservation Techniques: Understand soil erosion including why it happens and how to avoid it, how to improve soil fertility, and maintain soil health in your own outdoor spaces
Local Soil Types: Identify and describe the predominant soil types in Upstate South Carolina. We’ll also discuss their characteristics and suitability for different land uses.

Class 2: Watersheds and Water Conservation
Water is powerful and plays such an important role on our land and in our lives. You’ll see our Upstate Topography with whole new eyes and be more informed on how to be a good and resourceful steward of your own water resources after this class. This class includes a discovery walk at Farm in the Wildwood to demonstrate and enhance concepts learned in class.
Watershed Basics: Define what a watershed is and explain its significance in the hydrological cycle. We’ll also discover the major watersheds in Upstate South Carolina.
Water Quality and Conservation: Explore the factors affecting water quality, including pollution sources and runoff. Discuss strategies for conserving water and protecting water resources.
Water’s influence on our geography: We’ll discuss wetlands, riparian areas, rivers and streams and discuss their ecological importance and the challenges they face in Upstate, SC.

Class 3: Wildlife and Plant Life Conservation
The creatures and botanicals that make life more interesting. This class includes a discovery plant and animal ID walk at Farm in the Wildwood to demonstrate and enhance concepts learned in class.

Biodiversity and Ecosystems: We’ll learn concepts of biodiversity and ecosystems. Discuss the importance of conserving wildlife and plant life for ecological balance.
Native Species of Upstate South Carolina: We’ll learn about wildlife and plant species commonly found in the region and discuss their roles in the ecosystem.
Conservation Efforts: Highlight local conservation efforts and ways participants can get involved in conservation efforts in their own outdoor spaces and community.
