Open Studio: Mech Choulay

Join Mech Choulay as she shares the outcome of her residency at the Creative Generation Performance Lab.
During her time in residence, Choulay has explored different methods and materials to engage audiences around ideas of peace, care, and connection. Following several days of collaborative weaving workshops, she now invites the public to visit her Open Studio.
Visitors are welcome to explore the installation created from these collective processes, see the objects up close, and join informal conversations with the artist about her approach and experience.
All are welcome to drop by and spend time in the space.
About the artist:
Mech Choulay (b. 1992, Kandal, Cambodia) is an artist, documentary filmmaker, and freelance journalist based in Phnom Penh. Her practice centers on environmental justice, animal rights, and human-interest storytelling. Trained in journalism at the Cambodian Center for Independent Media and in filmmaking at the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, her work has been published locally and internationally, including in Southeast Asia Globe, Voice of Democracy, and The Washington Post. Her multidisciplinary work spans photography, film, and performance, including Mother of River, a powerful piece exploring the relationship between women, water, and ecological resilience along the Mekong River. She has received multiple grants and awards, including from Creative Generation, Angkor Photo Festival, and CEEJA. In 2023, she was an Angkor Photo Festival Fellow and an artist-in-residence at Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia, and became the first Cambodian woman to receive an award from Objectifs.
