Treibball originated in Germany in 2005, and means ‘push ball’. Treibball is a low-cost, low-impact sport, any dog and handler can play! The goal is for the dog to push balls into a soccer goal without physical assistance from the owner within an allotted time. As a dog and handler progress competitively, additional challenges may be added. These challenges include longer distance to herd the balls, shorter time limits, more balls, or rules regarding the order that the dog may herd the balls.
NATE, the National Association of Treibball Enthusiasts is the main organization for the sport, and they now offer different levels of certification for different skills that make up the game. Targeting, Pushing, and Directional control are the three main skills needed.
This introductory workshop will teach you the foundation skills that we can build upon towards level certification and competition. Reinforcement strategies for optimum learning, targeting, moving between targets, going around object/ball to target, pushing an object/ball, stimulus control around the ball (pause or push), and learning to steer the ball. As you can see, many of these foundational skills can be utilized for a variety of other sports so even if you never compete in Treibball, the training provides you skills that can be helpful for other sports like agility, obedience, Nosework, and many others.
