The Outrun

"The Outrun" is a 2024 English-language drama film based on the 2016 memoir "The Outrun" by Amy Liptrot. Starring Saoirse Ronan, the film tells the story of Rona, a young woman born in Orkney who has been living in London as a postgrad student, where her joy in her freedom has been succeeded by alcohol abuse and depression.

Fresh out of rehab, she returns to the wild Orkney Islands after more than a decade away. As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her childhood merge with the more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.

The film was directed by Nora Fingscheidt who wrote the screenplay with Liptrot and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024 and received nominations for Best Actress and Best British Film at the 2025 BAFTAs.
