Seaton Holme’s history is stacked across several layers. Once a Priest’s house and rectory built in 1249, there as an even older Anglo Saxon rectory built on its site.
One of those who lived here includes Nicholas Breakspear, who would later go on to become the first and only English Pope. How many people can say they’ve investigated a former Pope’s house?
The building has served many purposes. It was also used as a local court room. In 1569, 2 men were found guilty of trying to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I here, and sent to the gallows on Easington village Green to be hanged.
The cellar was where those standing trial were kept.
Over the years, the building has been a poor house, and due to the rise in local children being orphaned, it specially was a poor house for orphans, and became known for its strict rules and punishments. Documents show one child was murdered in the building and is buried in the graveyard over the road.
A grey lady in the building is believed to be the spirit of a woman murdered in Bedroom 6 upstairs, although the rooms are now different and we do not know which room this happened in.
The building was later used as a care home for elderly men, known as ‘Seaton Holme Hostel’, and became the end of the road for hundreds of ill men.
This site is also the site of one of Easington’s best documented ghost stories, when the Routh sisters (2 twins who lived in the farm behind the rectory) made local newspapers in 1919 for seeing a monk disappear whilst in a field beside the rear carpal. The farm that they lived in was once part of the rectory.
