About Lucy Rose

On her 5th album This Ain’t The Way You Go Out, Lucy Rose has wrought something inspiring from immense personal struggle. Prior to writing the record, Lucy faced the possibility that life as an artist was behind her. 5 weeks after the birth of her son Otis, Lucy started experiencing back pain so bad that she couldn’t lift him, and even breathing hurt. It transpired that Lucy had 8 fractured vertebrae and was suffering from rare condition pregnancy-induced osteoporosis. Through treatments, patience and hard work she gradually recovered. Her first aim was modest, to pick up her son again, and the idea of picking up a guitar or sitting at a piano at times painfully distant. As she recovered music came to provide first an escape and then a cathartic mode of confronting this experience. The result - a deeply frank and candid relaying of personal struggle, as one reviewer said “the most inspired part is how the album repositions that quiet register as silent rage”. Lucy wrote the record alone at her piano, recorded the basis of the album at Paul Weller's studio with a trio, then assembled a cast of collaborators whose work she loved and who she trusted to both understand and expand what she was trying to do. Co-producer Kwes (Loyle Carner, Solange) jumped at the chance to work with her “I loved the songs from the start. It was super freeing working on it...like a de Kooning painting, where there is already a really beautiful piece of work, and I could just start chiseling away"
