About Gerardo Coronel

Gerardo Coronel (nickname "El Jerry") is a corrido and alterna movimiento singer/songwriter who first made his mark at the age of 14 for the single "El Guerrero" and for composing the hit corrido "La Tacoma," recorded by El Kommander, Julian Mercado, and El Bebeto. His debut long-player, El Jerry, appeared in 2017, followed by Hombres Como Yo in 2019. Coronel released a slew of live albums, too, including that year's De Lujo en Vivo. 2020's Unas Mias y Otras Prestadas was followed by a second volume in 2022. During a prolific singles run, he released the widely acclaimed long-player La Ratonera in May, and in December, Cumbia Aesthetics. In May 2024, Coronel released the 14-track CHSM El Hifgado X2; by June, the singer/songwriter had released more than a dozen singles. Coronel was born in 1996 in Apatzingán Michoacán. At 12 his family moved to Culiacan, and he was already writing his own songs. After composing "El Guerro," he was invited to join a local band in Sinaloa, but he left after two years to pursue his own career. His videos attracted the attention of Twiins Music, which signed the young artist. The label issued the digital singles "Te Quiero a Morir" and "No Era Penal," and released his 20-track debut album, Historias de un Coronel, which raced up the digital charts after the success of its lead single "Inevitable" and the accompanying video, which garnered over a million views on YouTube in its first month. The label spent 2015 promoting the album by issuing numerous tracks on various corrido compilations and by putting Coronel on the road, not only in Northern Mexico but in the American Southwest, where "Inevitable" was added to the playlists of many radio stations. To celebrate his success north of the border, the live En Vivo Desde Los Angeles album followed that year. Coronel issued the Joey Balderrama-directed video for "Soy Poco Malo" in early 2017 -- he was backed on the cut by Banda La Fantastica. The track ran up the video charts as the pre-release single for his second studio album, El Jerry, issued later in the year. Just after the album saw release, Coronel began hustling videos on YouTube and singles to streaming including 2019's El Pariente" and "Lo Se," as well as three live albums that included El Vivo Desde Malecon de Los Angeles. 2020's Unas Mias y Otras Prestadas was a seamless, 14-track album that wove impassioned lyric performances into traditional arrangements. That year also saw Coronel release 15 singles. Another ten singles were released during 2021, including the charting "Te Deseo Lo Mejor" with Pancho Barraza. T The following year, the songwriter released El Jerry 2022 in addition to a live album and 23 singles! 2023 was a very successful year for Coronel as well. He issued four charting singles (out of 19) that included "Te Felicito," as well three full-lengths in La Ratonera, Cumbia Aesthetics, and CHSM El Higado. The singer kicked off 2024 as a featured collaborator with Cuisillos on the charting "Al Menos Indicado." He hit the charts again with his own "Tutorial Para Olvidar" and released CHSM El Higados X2. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
