About Freshlyground

A South African Afro-fusion band, Freshlyground came together in Cape Town in 2002. Led by singer Zolani Mahola, and featuring Simon Attwell on flute, mbira and harmonica, Peter Cohen on drums, Kyla Rose Smith on violin, Julio “Gugs” Sigauque on acoustic guitar, Josh Hawks on bass guitar and Seredeal “Shaggy” Scheepers on keyboards and percussion, Freshlyground blended traditional kwela and African folk with jazz, blues and an indie rock sensibility into a distinctive and refreshing style and sound. The group released a debut album, Jika Jika, in 2003, following it with Nomvula in 2004, Ma’ Cheri in 2007, and Radio Africa in 2010. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi
