Divine grew up in a working-class family in Mumbai’s Andheri neighborhood. Life wasn’t easy—his father was largely absent, and his mother had to work abroad to support the family. This period, spent with his grandmother, deeply influenced Divine’s outlook, giving him a first-hand look at the challenges faced by India’s urban poor.
Music entered Divine’s life through his school friends, who introduced him to hip-hop. Although Bollywood dominated India’s music scene, Divine was drawn to the raw expression he found in rap. Artists like Tupac and Nas, who shared honest stories about life’s struggles, resonated deeply with him and inspired him to create his own music.
His first major breakthrough came with “Yeh Mera Bombay” (This Is My Bombay), a song that gave listeners an unfiltered look at life in Mumbai’s slums. The track quickly went viral, gaining him a large following and establishing him as a powerful voice in Indian rap.
