作詞家・秋元康氏が総合プロデューサーを務め、「会いに行けるアイドル」をコンセプトに、秋葉原にあるAKB48劇場を拠点として2005年より活動開始。 「AKB48選抜総選挙」「リクエストアワー」といったファン参加型イベントや、シングルのミリオンセールスを通して、日本を代表するアイドルグループへと成長。 2022年10月19日に発売した60thシングル「久しぶりのリップグロス」は、『オリコン週間シングルランキング』47作連続で1位を獲得。「女性アーティストによるシングル連続1位獲得作品数」「女性アーティストによるシングル通算1位獲得作品数」を更新。 AKB48の姉妹グループは、国内に5グループ（SKE48・NMB48・HKT48・NGT48・STU48）、さらに海外に6グループ（JKT48・BNK48・MNL48・AKB48 TeamSH・AKB48 TeamTP・CGM48）と、世界各国で活動している。 With lyricist Yasushi Akimoto serving as general producer, AKB48 began its activities in 2005 at the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara, based on the concept of "idols you can go to see".
