About the Bootcamp

This five-day STEM holiday bootcamp has been designed and will be run by Zac Hutton, a robotics design consultant and mentor who specialises in making advanced technology engaging and accessible for young people. Zac has delivered workshops in robotics, coding and electronics at local innovation hubs and has designed projects ranging from robotic arms to educational battle robots. His focus is on helping students learn real-world skills in a fun, hands-on environment.

The program runs from Monday January 19 to Friday January 23, 2026, across nine sessions of three hours each. Students can choose individual courses that interest them, or complete the full week for the most comprehensive experience. With class sizes capped at 15 students, every participant will receive the support and guidance they need.

Courses:

Beginners Guide to Fusion 360 – Monday January 19, 9:00am–12:00pm
Students are introduced to 3D design using Autodesk Fusion 360. They will learn how to sketch, use constraints, create parametric models, and prepare files for 3D printing. Each student will have one of their designs printed to take home.
What to bring:

  • Laptop with charger
  • Fusion 360 installed (free hobbyist/student version)

Learn How to Solder – Monday January 19, 1:00pm–4:00pm
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of electronics assembly. They will practice soldering techniques, identify basic components, and assemble a project to keep. Safety and correct tool use are a core focus.
What to bring :

  • Optional: Glasses if students have difficulty seeing up close

BattleBots Course – Tuesday January 20, 9:00am–12:00pm and 1:00pm–4:00pm
Students design, build and test their own mini combat robot. They will assemble the chassis, wire up motors and batteries, add armor and simple non-destructive weapons, and finish with a friendly competition at the end of the course.
What to bring:

  • Laptop with charger
  • Mouse (recommended)
  • Fusion 360 software installed

Make Your Own Voice Assistant with ESP32 – Wednesday January 21, 9:00am–12:00pm and Thursday January 22, 9:00am–12:00pm
Students create a working voice assistant using the ESP32 microcontroller. They will connect microphones and speakers, set up WiFi, and experiment with speech recognition and responses. This course introduces coding and hardware integration.
What to bring:

  • Laptop with charger
  • Arduino IDE installed (free download)

n8n Workflow Automation – Thursday January 22, 1:00pm–4:00pm and Friday January 23, 1:00pm–4:00pm
Students learn to connect apps and devices through workflow automation. They will build automations such as sending emails, linking to IoT devices, and connecting to their ESP32 project. By the end, they will understand how automation powers modern technology and business systems. The final Friday session also includes a student showcase where parents are welcome.
What to bring:

  • Laptop with charger
  • Free n8n account created before session (Use free trial)

Fusion 360 Advanced – Friday January 23, 9:00am–12:00pm
This advanced session builds on the Monday introduction, teaching students about assemblies, motion studies and parametric workflows. They will refine their designs and learn how to export models for 3D printing, laser cutting or CAM processes.
What to bring:

  • Laptop with charger
  • Fusion 360 installed (free hobbyist/student version)
  • Mouse (recommended)

General Requirements on what to bring:

  • Laptop with charger for all sessions except soldering
  • Lunch, snacks and water bottle for full days
  • All other software, tools and components are provided
