Wide Angle Photo Club September News Email

Greetings to all current and former members of the Pensacola, FL, Wide Angle Photo Club. This is a new initiative to engage with current and former club members, providing them with information about upcoming events and speakers.
This email will address several topics of interest to club members, focusing on revitalizing the club and planning for its future.
1. Annual Power of Photography® (POP) show.
2. Efforts to attract new members and retain current members.
3. Feedback from members on topics for club meetings, speakers, and events.
Power of Photography® (POP) Show
The WAPC annual POP show was a significant event for the club during the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival in Pensacola, November 7-9, 2024, in downtown Pensacola. The event was held at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center; however, this year, the club was unable to secure the center for the 3-day event and had no option but to cancel the event. The club hopes to return to the Center in 2026 or locate a new venue.
The Power of Photography® show was previously a great success, but has experienced problems in the last couple of years. OUR PRIMARY CHALLENGE IS ENLISTING SUFFICIENT VOLUNTEERS to set up, tear down, and manage the center during the three-day event. PLEASE CONSIDER HOW IMPORTANT THIS EVENT IS TO THE CLUB AND YOU.

Membership
While the club’s website lists a significant number of members (used to generate this email listing), the number of dues-paying members is substantially less. Annual dues are crucial to the club's continued operation and its long-term future. Dues support the club’s operations, including storage of POP display stands, renting a site for monthly club meetings, and administrative costs. Artist fees are collected when submitting photos for the POP Show. The money collected covers the costs of the show itself. As a non-profit organization, it also provides donations to local and national charities and supplements projects that offer services to our members. Since there will be no revenue from the POP show this year, dues are more critical than usual. It should be noted that all club officers are voluntary positions and receive no monetary support.

Member Feedback
Members are encouraged to submit ideas for future club events, meeting discussions, and speakers. Members who actively participate in the club’s meetings, events, and shows are crucial to the club's future. The club can only provide a meaningful experience for its members if it receives feedback from the members on their needs.
The Wide Angle Photo Club meets every second Monday night, 6-8 pm at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 5725 North Ninth Avenue, Pensacola, Florida 32504, across from Pensacola State College.
Upcoming events and speakers.
October 13 Meeting
Guest speakers from the University of West Florida Department of Archaeology will discuss the use of photography in their research.
John Worth
Dr. John Worth, a professor of anthropology, teaches historical archaeology, historical research methods, the history of the Southeastern Indians, and field and laboratory methods in archaeology. One of the foremost experts on Spanish colonial history, he is the principal site investigator for the archaeological site of the Tristán de Luna settlement – the oldest established multi-year European settlement in the United States – that was discovered in a developed neighborhood in Pensacola in 2015.
John Bratten
Dr. John Bratten, a professor of anthropology, teaches courses in archaeology, maritime studies, shipwreck archaeology, and artifact conservation. As co-principal investigator of the Emanuel Point II shipwreck, Bratten combines his passion for science and archeology by overseeing the excavation and artifact conservation of the second vessel from Tristán de Luna’s 1559 colonization fleet. He uses a state-of-the-art freeze-dryer provided by the Archaeology Institute to stabilize and preserve diagnostic information from artifacts that have been submerged in water for over 400 years.

PLEASE TRY AND ATTEND THE OCTOBER MEETING TO DISCUSS THE CLUBS FUTURE INCLUDING THE 2026 POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW AND FUTURE EVENTS.
