Wednesdays, September 10 - October 29 (8 weeks)
5:30pm - 8pm
Instructor: Nelly DeVault
In this class you will learn to spin your own yarn from the very beginning and then develop your skills in different areas over the course of 3 months. Not only will you learn to spin, but you will be introduced to a variety of different types of fibers and learn how they are cleaned, carded and prepared for spinning. You will need to either have your own spinning wheel or rent one from Tabby Tree for the duration of the class. At home practice will be necessary between class sessions.
Class 1: Drop Spindles! Learn this very portable and ancient form of spinning wool.
Class 2: Spinning on a wheel - learn about different types of spinning wheels and how they work. Learn the parts of the wheel, spinning ratios, and tension adjustments.
Class 3: Fiber Processing - learn how wool is cleaned, carded and prepared for spinning
Class 4: Breather class - bring in your wheel and spin together. Trouble shoot any problems you have been having while practicing on your own and hone your technique.
Class 5: Plying - By now you have spun a good amount of single ply yarn. Now let's ply them together! Then learn how to wind onto a niddy noddy to make a skein, then wash your yarn.
Class 6: Wool breeds - Sample various wool breeds and learn about the characteristics of each.
Class 7: Core Spinning and Boucle - learn how to create interesting textured yarns by spinning around around a core. Textured yarns lend a lot of beauty to knit, crocheted or hand woven projects!
Class 8 - Spinning Silk, Linen and Cotton - these different fibers have different characteristics from wool and their own challenges. Learn the techniques for spinning each of these fibers to add to your spinning repertoire.
