October 4 - Collage Artist Book Workshop with Elisa Lanzi

Do you have a stash of paper odds and ends (e.g., handmade paper experiments, printmaking scraps, drawing fragments, vintage advertisements etc.) that you can’t bear to part with?! Join instructor, Elisa Lanzi in making a one of a kind hinged accordion book using upcycled materials. Your multi-panel book can serve as a visual journal of your art or a unique artist collaged book.

The workshop will introduce participants to two simple book formats - a hinged multi-panel book & a folded book. Methods include hinging, collaging, cutting, pasting, folding, and layout.

Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring their favorite paper odds and ends to use in their books. The instructor will also bring a limited amount of handmade paper scraps and booty from her extensive ephemera files. Plus, participants will get to incorporate a variety of unique and beautiful papers from the Paper Connection collection. It's fun to have lots of scraps to choose from and they only need to be 3 x 4 inches. Tools are provided but you are welcome to bring your favorites (exacto knives, bone folders, scissors, etc.).

No previous art or bookmaking experience is needed. This workshop will focus on simple ways to use upcycled materials making it accessible for artists and creators of all backgrounds to take what they learned and apply it at home.

About the Instructor

ELISA LANZI is a multimedia artist and writer working at the intersection of printmaking and book arts. An ardent traveler, she draws inspiration from sojourns to the Mediterranean, the American West and New England; her abstract work responds to visual motifs that span centuries and geography. Cultural migrations, conquests, religion, and mythology are woven into the mix. These themes are explored in original hand-printed works, artists’ books, collage, poetry, and handmade paper. Elisa’s work is exhibited in juried and invitational settings, including in Massachusetts, New York, Texas, Vermont (USA), Italy and Brazil. She is actively engaged in the arts community – curating, giving talks and teaching workshops. Elisa is a member of Zea Mays Printmaking, The Boston Printmakers, New England Book Artists and Monotype Guild of New England. Her deep engagement with books and art was fueled by an earlier career in libraries and museums. Elisa grew up in an Italian American family in Rochester, New York and currently lives in western Massachusetts.
