12 PM - 1 PM: ALUMNI RECOGNITION AND PANEL DISCUSSION
During the panel discussion, we will recognize our alumni who have become accomplished leaders in the biomedical industry and medicine, serving our Pasadena community and beyond.

MEET THE PANELISTS
Warren (Ren) Brown, MD, is a board certified physician in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, founder and CEO of Proactive Care Partners in Pasadena, and former vice president of Medical Affairs and Clinical Strategy at Whole Foods. There, he led the development of its Whole Health Plan and expanded the Whole Health concepts, positively impacting a population of over 100,000. He was an intern at HMRI in 1993.
Baxton Chen was a former intern in HMRI's Cardiovascular Signaling Laboratory in 2022, and in 2023, he was a teaching assistant in its High School STEM Program. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Harvard and a Master of Science in Community Health and Prevention Research from Stanford. Baxton spent the past year as a curriculum team member in Stanford Medicine's Halpern-Felsher Lab and is now applying to medical school.
Michele Kipke, PhD, is a professor of Pediatrics and Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine and associate vice president for Strategic Health Alliances in the Office of the Senior Vice President of Health Affairs at the University of Southern California (USC) and has been an elected member of the South Pasadena Unified School District’s Governing Board since 2008.
David Klug is the Economic Development Director for the City of Pasadena.
Ashwini Lakshmanan, MD, MS, MPH, FAAP is an associate professor in the Department of Health Systems Science at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. She is also chair of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Qualitative Research Group, chair of the Perinatal Quality Improvement Panel Education Committee, and leader in the Health Equity Taskforce for the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC). She was an intern at HMRI in 1998.
