What does the workshop cover?
This 6 week course will enable you to learn the skills to sew with confidence through upcycling, remaking and mending. You will be exploring sustainable sewing each week with a different project, enabling you to learn and discuss how to sew sustainably, through techniques that are traditional and creative.
This course runs weekly from the 9th September from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Week 1 – Trapped scraps panel
In the first workshop we will be exploring an exciting way of creating your own fabric using scraps of
fabric, trapped between two layers of organza. This is a really creative process that can give a
different result each time. We will complete a panel, which you can take home.
Week 2 – upcycling with men’s shirts
This workshop we will be exploring the many ways a simple men’s shirt can be upcycled into a whole
new garment. You will be shown how to drape, and explore ways to create different ideas, then start
the process of transforming your ideas, so you can take your working progress to finish at home.
Week 3 – piecing together fabrics
Piecing together fabrics is a fabulous technique for using up smaller pieces to create new.
Patchworking is a traditional method of joining fabric, but in this workshop we will look at not only
how to do this, but how we can use your newly created panels in existing garments to upcycle or
repair it.
Week 4 -Hand sewing scraps
Inspired by traditional Japanese sashiko mending, this technique is not only used for practical
mending, but can also create beautiful decorative result. We will learn the technique and reate a
small panel. This method looks great as panels for things like jeans repairs, but also makes gorgeous
cards. (sewing machine not required this week)
Week 5 -mending and repairing
We all have things that we love wearing and sometimes need repairing, and this week we will be
looking at the many ways in which to do this, from patching holes, to hemming, using fabric to
reinforce seams, and using bias binding.
Week 6 – Your choice of upcycling!
In this final week, we invite you to bring along one of your own garments, that you love to wear but
needs either repairing, altering, upcycling or decorating. As a group we will discuss ideas for how and
what you could do, and draw upon what you’ve learned over the course and get you started on your
exciting new project.
