1715 8th Avenue West, Palmetto, United States
We are looking for a small group of volunteers to help us save a population of a very rare, federally endangered species called Britton’s Bear Grass (Nolina brittonia). This incredibly special plant is endemic to Florida, meaning it does not exist anywhere else on the planet. This population at Chito Branch Reserve is being taken over by Cogongrass (imperata cylindrica) and rose Natal grass (Melinis repens)- two highly invasive exotic species. On March 4th we will be hand pulling the Natal grass and carefully hand wiping and selectively spraying herbicide on the Cogon grass to prevent it from spreading further, and to give the Bear Grass a chance to thrive. Volunteers will meet at our warehouse (1715 Eighth Ave W Palmetto, FL) at 8am and we will return there around 1pm. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothing suitable for gardening or working outdoors. Come play a direct role in protecting a rare Florida native plant and help restore this unique habitat!!
Tickets for Saving Britton's Bear Grass can be booked here.
