This class is geared toward landowners interested in using prescribed burning as a management tool for prairies and woodlands. Participants will gain access to fire caches with equipment such as drip torches, Nomex, and other fire specific tools.
The class is mostly made up of indoor sessions, however, there is an afternoon rotation that will take participants outdoors as well. There will NOT be a burn.
Topics to be covered: benefits of fire on prairie and woodlands; setting goals and objectives; creating and using a burn plan; fire breaks; lighting techniques; tools, and Safety - Safety - Safety!!

This is a partnership of public and private conservation agencies who work cooperatively to improve the ability of all people to care for our natural resources in Southeast Iowa. There will be a diversity of presenters, each sharing their experiences and expertise. The group includes the following County Conservation Boards: Johnson, Muscatine, Louisa, Washington, Des Moines, Henry, and Lee. The US FWS, Iowa DNR, NRCS, The Nature Conservancy, Bur Oak Land Trust, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever.
