Prairie Seed Harvests

Prairie seed harvests are a great way to get outside, explore a new park, be in community with other nature lovers, and take part in the prairie restoration process. No experience is needed, and a quick training starts each program. There are morning and a couple evening options, and options with long hikes to harvest areas or no hiking to fit a variety of needs.

During these events, volunteers will learn to identify the target wildflower species by seed, then spend 1-2 hours picking seed heads by hand. All harvested seeds will be processed for planting projects, and used in upcoming restoration projects. Seeds harvests will be distributed between JCC planting projects, and our partners with Pollinator Partnership for their Project Wingspan initiative to boost native wildflower plantings on private lands in the region.

Locations and times vary (not all details were able to be added to these events - check the sign up for more details). All harvests are dependent on weather, recent rain/moisture levels in seeds, and ripeness of seeds. Events may be cancelled or locations may change as needed for better conditions.
