Born in Little Canada, MN, Maggie’s love for gymnastics began at age 3. By 14, she had earned a spot on the U.S. National Team, traveling the globe to help Team USA win international medals. A top contender for the 2016 Olympic Games, her journey took an unexpected turn when she became the first athlete to report sexual abuse by a USA Gymnastics team doctor in 2015. Known as “Athlete A” during much of the investigation, Maggie came forward publicly in 2018, sharing her story alongside other survivors and helping spark lasting change in the sport.

Her courage was featured in the 2020 Netflix documentary Athlete A, bringing worldwide attention to the fight for athlete safety and survivor support. In 2016, Maggie left elite gymnastics for the NCAA, where she became one of the most decorated gymnasts in history, earning the nickname “The Michael Jordan of College Gymnastics.” Today, she serves as a student assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, pursues her master’s degree, and leads The Maggie Nichols Foundation, dedicated to helping survivors of all types of abuse.
