Creating a cohesive body of work and refining your artistic voice are part of the same journey. Finding your voice is easier when you have a clear conceptual direction for your artwork. This workshop will guide you in developing a system for creating with intention. We will examine the 3 phases of the creative process: research and planning, exploration and experimentation, and creation and execution, and what questions to reflect on during each phase. We will also discuss how to get clarity on where you get stuck in the creative process, what it reveals about your art practice and journey, and how to play to your strengths while also moving out of your comfort zone so your work can evolve and you can achieve your professional goals–getting gallery representation, selling your work at art fairs, effectively conveying your ideas, exhibiting your work, etc.
Day 1 will focus on understanding the “why” behind your work, and the role mind mapping can play in creating a conceptual foundation for your work (not just the next body of work but as the fertile ground where future work germinates, too). We will share our current studio practice and artwork to gain a deeper understanding of where we each are so we can support each other during our time together. We will discuss what ideas inspire us and which could be the seed for our next body of work. We will mind map our ideas and discuss how our mind map and studio journaling can elucidate the story behind our art.
Day 2, we discuss the role of experimentation and exploration in creating your body of work and how to evaluate and understand the work we create in this phase. We will explore the role of compositional elements such as colour, texture, value, composition, and medium in our body of work and how to utilize this phase of the process to refine and leverage these design fundamentals in our body of work. Finally, we will examine the execution and creation phase, where we make “finished” artworks, and what our aspirations are for the new body of work we will create.
There will be ample time each session for discussion and journaling. The goal is to have a framework, system, and plan to create your cohesive body of work and an idea of what you want to do with it when it is completed so you can execute it when you return home.
Cost: $500 - Preregistration Required.
