A burst of creativity, collaboration, and adrenaline is coming to Imagine Performing Arts Center as local artists take on the ultimate theatrical challenge in Play-In-A-Day (PIAD) — a high-energy event where teams will write, rehearse, and perform original short plays in just 24 hours.
For over two decades, PIAD was led by Producing Artistic Director Beth Marshall, and now continues under the direction of Clark Levi, a 10-year veteran of the event. Over the years, this nomadic tradition has benefitted and moved through a wide variety of venues including: SAK Comedy Lab, Orlando Fringe, Central Florida Theatre Alliance, Orlando Shakes, Lake Howell Theatre Company, Penguin Point Productions, and more — including a virtual pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Each year, over 50 artists have come together to write, act, direct, dance, improvise, and play — all in just one day.
Beginning the evening of 9/19/25, writers, directors, and actors will gather at Imagine to receive a prompt and be assigned to teams. From there, the clock starts. In 24 hours, each team must take a concept from blank page to final curtain.
The culmination? A one-night-only performance on Saturday, 9/20/25 at 7:00 PM, where audiences will witness the raw, spontaneous results of this theatrical sprint.
“Play-In-A-Day is about trusting your instincts, embracing the chaos, and collaborating under pressure,” says Sarah Fanok, Executive Director of Imagine. “It’s theatre at its most alive.”
Throughout its history, PIAD has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and in-kind goods/services for organizations including: PlayFest, PULSE, The Trayvon Martin Foundation, GOPAR, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, The Loveland Foundation, The Bail Project, Planned Parenthood, The Inclusivity Project, and more. Last year, over $1,100 was raised for The LGBTQ+ Center of Orlando, the beneficiary again this year.
A Few Things Always Hold True at PIAD:
It’s a volunteer-powered event by and for the Central Florida artistic community.
Artists work together to create fully staged 10-minute (or shorter) works in just 24 hours.
PIAD is intentional about amplifying diverse voices.
Someone is ALWAYS in drag.
And above all… PIAD is Fabulous & Does Not Suck!
