Shadowkill – Nellie Jonsson
You push open the wooden door of the mead-hall and the rusty hinges creeks above you. A long-awaited warmth from the lit fireplace refuels your body as the door slams behind you. Water from your boots pool on the floor as the snow melts. In the hall, a long table is set with platters upon platters of meats, seafood and fruits. Any food you could desire after a treacherous journey is right front of you.
As you take in the scene, the feeling of care is slowly replaced by an eerie sensation. In your exhausted state, it takes a while for you to realize that there is no one else inside the hall. Time has completely stopped. There is not even a flicker from the lit candles. The food, while decadent and beautifully placed, is on the brink of decay. A slight shiny slime covers the grapes. Finally, you notice the centerpiece – the severed head of a horse.
In the exhibition Killshadow at QB Gallery, Nellie Jonsson plays with the aesthetics of the medieval in an intuitive interpretation of its objects. The title derives from the name of her younger brother’s avatar in World of Warcraft – a fantasy roleplaying game from the early 2000s. Increasingly, these aesthetics have entered into the mainstream as means for both escapism from and criticism of contemporary life.
While delving into the world of fantasy and the medieval, the present lingers within the delicate and playful ceramic exhibited. It is clear that Jonsson cares deeply about the objects she creates and through them is able to say something incredibly human without any human presence at all. The objects themselves hold memory, as an archive of lived life. The attention and love spared for the objects also bring a critical reflection of our relationship to things - an oscillation between too much and not enough.
