Kan revolusjonens mål hellige midlene, eller er samfunnsmessige omveltninger av denne typen aldri legitime? Professor Lea Ypi (LSE) utforsker dette i årets Exphil-forelesning.
OM FORELESNINGEN
Forfattere som vurderer om revolusjoner er berettigede, deles ofte inn i to leire. Den ene kritiserer revolusjoner på bakgrunn av institusjonell legalisme. De mener at siden revolusjonens midler er gale, kan en revolusjon aldri være rett. Andre bifaller revolusjoner på bakgrunn av idealistisk moralisme. Deres syn er at siden formålet er rett, kan en revolusjon aldri være gal.
I denne forelesningen undersøker Lea Ypi begge siders argumenter, og lanserer et alternativ der hun forsøker å gå på tvers av motsetningen. Hun utforsker revolusjoner ikke i relasjon til rettferdighet for individer, men som forankret i en historiefilosofisk teori der kollektiv fremgang er sentralt.
Forelesningen er åpen for alle interesserte, og gis på engelsk.

OM LEA YPI
Lea Ypi (f. 1979) er professor i politisk teori ved London School of Economics (LSE). Hun er en ledende demokratiforsker og er særlig opptatt av spørsmål tilknyttet rettferdighet, migrasjon og territorielle rettigheter.
For den bredere offentlighet er hun mest kjent for oppvekstmemoaren «Fri» (på norsk i 2023), der livet i Albania før og etter diktaturet legges under lupen.
Ypi har mottatt en rekke priser for så vel sitt akademiske virke som sin populærvitenskapelige formidling, deriblant British Academys pris for fremragende forskning. Hun har vært med på lister av verdens viktigste tenkere i tidsskriftet Prospect og avisene Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung og El País.

Can the goals of revolution justify the means, or are societal upheavals of this kind always wrong? Professor Lea Ypi (LSE) explores these questions in this year's Exphil lecture.
ABOUT THE LECTURE
Authors who think about the justifiability of revolution are often divided between those who criticize it on grounds of institutional legalism, and those who endorse it on grounds of idealist moralism. Legalists think that since the means of revolution are wrong, revolution can never be right. Moralists think that since the ends of revolution are right, revolution can never be wrong.
In this lecture, Lea Ypi revisits their arguments and offers an alternative that tries to cut across the divide. She examines revolution not in relation to the justice of individuals but grounded in a philosophical theory of history that focuses on collective progress.
The lecture is open to all.

ABOUT LEA YPI
Lea Ypi (b. 1979) is professor of political theory at the London School of Economics (LSE). She is a leading scholar in democratic theory, with a particular focus on issues related to justice, migration, and territorial rights.
To the broader public, she is best known for her memoir “Free” (2021), which examines life in Albania before and after the dictatorship.
Ypi has received several awards for both her academic work and her popular science communication, including the British Academy's award for outstanding research. She has been included in lists of the world's most important thinkers in the magazine Prospect and in the newspapers Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and El PaÍs.
