Blacksmithing for Kids: Make a Tomahawk or Railroad Spike Knife (Ages 11-15)

This is our popular beginning Blacksmithing class for ages 11-15. Child is to be accompanied by an adult for the two day weekend class that runs from 9-3 each day. Students will learn foundational skills as they first complete a "J" hook with tapering, bending, twisting, punching a hole in, and cutting metal. Project two is shaping a tomahawk head from a claw hammer. Shape a blade, drift a handle hole and cut and shape the claws of the hammers. Students will grind, file and sand their projects. Students will temper their tomahawks. Day 2 will involve creating a wooden handle and fitting it to their tomahawk head. You need natural fiber clothing and footwear. Safety eyewear with side shields. Ear plugs. Well fitting leather gloves. A 2.5 lb. Metal working hammer. Call 207-205-4849 to register. The class is limited in size.
