Kaleta & Super Yamba Band

Brooklyn's Kaleta & Super Yamba Band, led by Afrobeat legend Leon "Kaleta" Ligan-Majek, blends the raw energy of Afrobeat and Juju with psychedelic funk. Kaleta, a native of Benin Republic raised in Nigeria, began performing in the late '70s, first with King Sunny Ade, then Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 band throughout the '80s and '90s.

Since 2017, Kaleta has fronted Super Yamba Band whose debut album, Mèdaho, was praised by Bandcamp and featured in Hulu’s High Fidelity. The band has earned recognition across the U.S. playing shows at the legendary Apollo Theatre, touring with Lauryn Hill and appearing on TV’s VICELAND and Adult Swim.

Super Yamba Band’s diverse members have collaborated with a range of artists from David Byrne to Yeasayer. A key moment in their evolution came through working with Senegalese griot musician Modou Mbenge, deepening their connection to global African music traditions.
