Follow Whitstable Choral SocietyWhitstable Choral Society was founded in 1932 by Alfred James Harrison, the then conductor, organist and choirmaster at St Alphege Church. From humble beginnings, we have grown into one of the most enduring and celebrated community choirs in Kent, with members drawn from Whitstable, Herne Bay, and Canterbury. One of our most influential figures was Harold Wright, who joined in 1934 as a bass singer and went on to serve as chairman, president, and ultimately life president until his passing in 1996 at the age of 93. His legacy of loyalty, leadership, and musical dedication continues to shape the Society today. We are honoured to have Ron Sivyer as our current president, a long-standing member awarded life membership for his invaluable service and encouragement.Singing Through the DecadesFrom our early days to present day, we've performed in some of the most iconic venues across East Kent—including regular appearances at Canterbury Cathedral, St Alphege Church, and the much-loved Colyer-Fergusson Hall at the University of Kent. We've embraced the changing musical landscape while staying true to our mission: to make choral music accessible and inspiring for all.Under the directorship of Dr David Flood (Organist and Master of Choristers at Canterbury Cathedral), appointed in 1995, the choir flourished—performing works by composers ranging from Monteverdi to Chilcott. In 2019, we proudly welcomed Spencer Payne, Director of Music at St. Edmund's School, who now leads us into an exciting new chapter of performances and outreach.
