Von Riga began his journey in the practice of kinbaku under renowned rope master Scott Haruteru in 2014 and has since received tutelage from a variety of local and international Bakushi (shibari masters), experiencing a range of aesthetic and philosophical approaches to the art of rope bondage. A founding curator of “Shibari at the Golden Monkey”, a monthly rope event held in Melbourne, Australia, he regularly performs at underground kink, burlesque and life drawing events, besides sharing his deep love for bondage teaching. Known for his fresh, accessible and attentive teaching style, Von Riga has taught professionally since 2018, joining master rope artist and head teacher Avalon as a founding teacher at Peer Rope Melbourne, maintaining his own teaching practice with weekly "Shibari Studio" sessions from his private residence in Coburg, and a monthly introductory event "Shibari at Mámor High Tea and Chocolate Szalón“ in Collingwood. With the rigour of traditional Japanese rope dojo training as a base, informed by a wider interest in SM and tantric arts, Von Riga‘s practice emphasises technical skill and proficiency balanced with beautiful aesthetic simplicity, where presence, intuitive play and connection with one’s tying partner is paramount.
