About The Derivative Fiction Book Club

Derivative fiction is a genre where creators draw inspiration from or base their works on existing well-known creations. It’s a way to pay homage, reinterpret, or add a fresh twist to something familiar, often opening new doors to explore the original in surprising ways. Our book club meets monthly to dive into thought-provoking discussions, share insights, and enjoy each other's company (refreshments included!). Together, we'll journey through this fascinating genre, discussing its strengths, quirks, and everything in between. We'll be exploring three main categories of derivative fiction:1️⃣ Appropriations: These are creative reimaginings of well-known texts that offer new perspectives or extend their meanings. Think of works like Power of Darkness (the Icelandic Dracula), Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Bill Willingham's Fables, or The Phantom by Susan Kay.2️⃣ Cash Grabs or Tie-In Novels: These literary works are based on popular media franchises like TV shows and movies. From Star Wars and Doctor Who to Barbie and Transformers, there’s an incredible variety of tie-in novels that stretch across genres and fan bases.3️⃣ Tributes or Fan Fiction: A realm where creativity knows no bounds! Fan-created stories take familiar characters and settings in bold new directions, with everything from masterfully crafted pieces to quirky gems just waiting to be discovered. If you’re passionate about media and storytelling, and you love exploring how familiar tales can be transformed and reimagined, this book club is for you.
