About The Charterhouse

The Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery in London, located between Barbican and Smithfield Market, and to the north of what is now Charterhouse Square. Since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the site has served as a private mansion, a boys’ school and an almshouse, which it remains to this day.  The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. Our mission is to provide housing, care and support for older people in need, while sharing our heritage and preserving it for future generations. Visiting our museum, chapel and shop is free of charge. We highly recommend you combine your visit to the museum with one of our fascinating tours of the site. We have several tours daily, either with one of our professional guides, or a tour with more of an insider perspective led by one of the residents of the almshouse. Please see our Tours page for booking information. We are open from 11.00am to 5.20pm Tuesday to Saturday.
