According to the 2019 State Supreme Court Diversity Report, Maine is one of thirteen states without a person of color sitting on its high court since 1960, the first year that such comprehensive data was available.We can change that.In partnership with legal scholars and leaders, we can dismantle the biased systems that hinder diverse attorneys’ efforts to reach the highest levels of legal achievement – whether in the judiciary, public office, private practice, business, or academia.The future demands more diverse voices, perspectives, and representation in positions of power traditionally reserved for White men and, more recently, White women. We see a future where Maine’s Law Court will have its first ethnic minority or LGBTQ+ Law Court justice and where Maine’s largest employers will have ethnic minorities or LGBTQ+ individuals in executive leadership positions.The Alpha Institute will cultivate and support the next generation of “firsts” while also ensuring that those firsts are not Maine’s last.
