It was the first year for this celebration in many years, so naturally it might be lacking. The bocce ball tournament was a positive. Yet when Avon and Gutter installers are among the few vendors at the event, it was disappointing. There are so many companies in Michigan that use Italian products and can promote them. The fact that true Italian foods were not represented was also a disappointment. Pizza, lots of pizza. Where was the arancine? the seafood? the cheeses? the olive oil? the couscous? the risotto? the rustic breads? the caponata? My husband who is Italian and I went with a desire to find some amazing things we might encounter on a trip to the old country. Unfortunately even Russo's restaurant offerings were an Americanized version of everything. Hopefully they will do better in the years to come.
