Saint Paul Church of God in Christ Community Development Ministries, Inc. (SPCDM) developed its free 12-week Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program in May 2000 from a holistic approach. It is relative to the nature of the construction and construction-related industries wherein trade math acumen, punctuality, attendance, mobility, and the ability to pass an alcohol/drug test often serve as the culprit for non-entry. SPCDM programming has proven beneficial in removing these academic (math/reading remediation) and psychological barriers. With the help of its funders, SPCDM continues its effort to address this and other disparities relative to applying for and gaining entry into the skilled trades. To date, 227 program completers were successfully placed into USDOL Registered Apprenticeship Programs. They are on their skilled trades’ career path to becoming journeymen as plumbers, pipefitters, bricklayers, sprinkler fitters, carpenters, and electricians, with paid living wages, benefits, (insurance, medical, dental), and a pension.
