Sophia’s Oasis For Equines, Inc. (SOFE), is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit, equine welfare organization located in southern Maryland. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of equines in need; assisting equines in situations of neglect, abuse or the threat of slaughter. We are also committed to assisting and partnering with other equine rescue organizations to save equines from the slaughter pipeline. We acknowledge that a team approach in the rescue community and sharing our individual unique resources is beneficial for all in attaining the common goal, giving every horse the opportunity at a safe and cared for life.Quite often we accept the challenge of the “no option horse”. Horses that are deemed aggressive, dangerous and have costly problematic health concerns. We are their option in lieu of euthanasia or the slaughter auction. These retraining and rehabilitation endeavors are timely and require treatment plans. They typically require months and at times close to a year in order to safely restore and mend what was broken, physically and mentally. In an attempt to avoid these situations we promote learning options and trainings in the community to educate the public regarding the standards of care required to maintain an equine as a riding partner and/or companion animal in a humane manner.We are managed solely by volunteers and fundraising. Currently we house 10 rescues, 3 of which are high priority rehabilitation requiring a veterinarian treatment plan. We donate our own time and resources in order to evaluate and determine the appropriate training curriculum for each horse’s needs. The average of each rescue for standard care and housing is $140.00/month.
