Our mission is to create brave spaces where children and adults can learn and practice vital interpersonal skills such as social emotional learning (SEL) competencies and character education (CE). Social emotional learning competencies such as self-awareness, social awareness, self-regulation, relationship skills and responsible decision making when infused into existing subjects’, educate students on the value of becoming a citizen of high moral character. By injecting theatre into SEL and CE programs, we can create classrooms where students feel a sense of safety, community and belonging. These components in turn affords students the space to think more creatively, take educational risks, develop a healthy sense of identity, build lasting and impactful relationships with their teachers and peers, regulate their thoughts, emotions, and actions, and make responsible decisions that will positively impact their lives and the communities in which they live, learn and work. Sawubona Creativity Project weaves SEL and CD components into various theater arts programs like applied improvisation, literary and performance arts, mindfulness workshops, storytelling, and playwriting in a way that is fun and interactive. These programs can also be injected into existing subjects and/or customize programs that are suitable for the student population.
