Founded in 2012 newChoir is a medium-sized ensemble of around 40 singers performing a wide repertoire of music from early music to established classics and modern works The aim is to give both singers and audience a fresh and revitalising experience During rehearsals and workshops, our musical director discusses different styles and periods of choral music and works on the choir's vocal technique (including singing in different languages), ensemble singing and general musicianship We welcome confident singers who can read music reasonably well and are prepared to work on the music between rehearsals. We provide excellent musical direction, vocal coaching, inspired leadership and well-planned rehearsals. We also limit choir numbers to around 40 to increase individual exposure, and we try to broaden horizons by tackling a wide, and often unusual, repertoire. Periodically, we run a singing assessment to make sure that members’ voices fit naturally into the choir, and to develop its collective sound. We take the view that self-rehearsal is essential as it allows us to move rapidly from an initial run-through to shaping the performance without getting stuck on ‘note- bashing’. In this way we expect to move from first rehearsal of a programme to the concert performance in around eight or nine weeks. We are lucky to have Janet Lincé and James Brown as key members of the musical ‘team’; both are well known locally and have national and international profiles. Janet runs efficient and highly enjoyable rehearsals whilst James, apart from being an excellent repetiteur, also supports us wonderfully in concert. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings (19:30hrs) at the New Road Baptist Church Bonn Square. Membership is £15 for the year plus £45 per term.
