About NCBW-Prince George's County MD, Inc.

THE PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY NATIONAL CONGRESS OF BLACK WOMEN (PGC NCBW) supports the national mission and vision with programs and activities designed to be a catalyst that helps community members reach their goals and fulfill their potential. Such activities include:VOTER INITIATIVEIn partnership with Prince George’s County’s and Maryland’s Board of Elections, PGC NCBW has participated in voter registration drives, including but not limited to: community fairs/events; school/college resource fairs; and, a senior citizen assisted living center. In addition, we have partnered with the Prince George’s County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Capitol Heights Town Administrator to serve as moderators and facilitators for local candidate forums.MARCH FOR OUR LIVESIn partnership with “The March for Our Lives”, a student-led demonstration, we marched to support stronger gun violence prevention measures. Gun violence includes mass shootings, suicides, domestic abuse, and violence on our streets which disproportionately affects our youth and communities of color.COLLEGE FOR KIDS SCHOLARSHIPS AND MOREWith this initiative, our goal is to promote great opportunities for those in need to become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. Members have participated in a Gospel Extravaganza to raise funds for College for Kids: Health and Fitness. We provide scholarships to high school seniors and 1st year college students, including those with special needs, to be presented at our “Sisters Empowering Sisters” events. In addition, we participated in several HBCU Festivals sponsored by the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Washington, DC which saw over 10,000 people attend to learn about colleges and other organizations that bring extra opportunities and education to the students. One of our members helped to organize the festival.DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSEWe are a member of the Coalition of Women Against Domestic Violence and Abuse (COWADVA) that advocates for changing society to have zero tolerance for domestic violence. We do this through events that affect public policy; educate and increase awareness of the impact of domestic violence on families and communities; and, generate action from non-profit and faith based groups on behalf of those impacted by domestic violence and abuse in our county.SPECIAL NEEDSWe advocate on behalf of children and youth with physical, developmental, behavioral/ emotional and sensory challenges, inclusive of racial/ethnic minorities, to be prepared for adult health care, further education, employment, and independent living. We partner with, among others, the National Congress of Black Women’s Culture of People with Disabilities Committee (condition specific awareness and training, such as autism, allergies, PTSD), and Family Voices, a network of family organizations across the United States that provide support to families of children and youth with special health care needs, their providers and professional organizations. Our ActivitiesHUMAN TRAFFICKINGThe available data clearly indicate that the number of youth experiencing human trafficking is increasing in Prince George’s County. PGC NCBW has been in collaboration with numerous human services organizations to increase awareness, identify county-wide trauma-informed approaches and plan a comprehensive, coordinated, community response to combating human trafficking. PGC NCBW has participated in National's Human Sex Trafficking Initiative and Bring Our Girls Back Campaign.HEALTH CARE/CIVIL RIGHTSPGC NCBW partnered with Health Care is a Human Right, Prince George’s County Chapter, to show the film, ‘POWER TO HEAL: MEDICARE AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS REVOLUTION” - exploring racism inhealthcare, past and present, in Greenbelt MD. This is an hour-long documentary chronicling the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that racially desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country, all in a matter of months in 1966. A panel of health experts and a community advocate interacted with the audience after the showing about options today, such as Improved Medicare for All. We also participated in Howard University Television’s live taping of “Vocal Point – The March: Then and Now”; The March on Washington (50 years later).GOVERNMENT AND NON-PROFIT EVENTS THAT IMPACT OUR COMMUNITIESMembers have attended Congressional and District Town Halls, Networking Meetings, Veterans Gatherings and government shut down informational meetings to be able to educate others on issues presented, progress made and to voice concerns. These have been convened by Senator Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, Congressman Steny Hoyer, Congressman Anthony brown and District 3 Council member Dannielle Glaros. In addition, we participate in non-profit informational and sustainability meetings with the People for Change Coalition and The Poor People's Campaign.CELEBRATING PHENOMENAL WOMEN AND MEN“Sisters Empowering Sisters” is an event that celebrates outstanding and giving people in Prince George’s County who have contributed to the improved well-being of people and communities.
