Built in 1887, the glorious building was the first grand house of worship in America built by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. After a 20 year, $20 million dollar restoration, the building is a city, state and National Historic Landmark, and the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side that is open to a broad public who wish to visit Jewish New York.
