About Memphis Movement Co

Ecstatic dance is a consciously facilitated, free-form movement experience designed to promote joy and self-expression. With a live DJ and gentle guidance, you become your own guide as the music takes you on an inward journey, creating a form of meditation in motion with every beat. This is a welcoming environment where everyone can gather to practice, pray, and play. Embrace a universal perspective that includes all individuals. People of all colors, ethnicities, sizes, ages, abilities, sexual orientations, genders, and religions are invited. We kindly request that everyone arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the event begins to check in and get seated for our Opening Circle. To maintain our space, anyone not seated on time may be asked to wait in the lobby during our Opening Circle and Connection Exercises, and will be allowed to enter once the DJ set has started. For the deepest embodiment of the practice, there are no shoes allowed in the dance space (unless you need them for medical reasons). There will be no talking, cell phone use, or videos/photos during the dance. Wild non-verbal sounds are always welcome! Please take all conversations, even brief ones, to the lobby. Ecstatic Dance facilitations are a sober event. Arrive clear in heart and body. The dance is the medicine. Parents must ensure their child's safety, whereabouts, and noise level to avoid disrupting others. Small children need constant supervision. We recognize the importance of tidiness for safety and comfort. The dance floor or studio area will be kept organized and clear of obstacles. Jackets and shoes should be placed in their designated areas, while small valuables and sealed water bottles need to be stored in the specified spots along the walls. The floors will be maintained clean, free from grime and dirt.Consentuality is one of the most emphasized and crucial components of Ecstatic Dance. We value choice and the preservation of one’s own experience. We will guide the audience to get a clear yes before involving others in a dance. To preserve the nonverbal approach of the practice, gestures are used to signal consent to others or when they are done holding space/dancing with another participant. We often include an altar in the dance space, positioned as a safe place for refuge or respite from stimulation and a space for stillness. We use sacred, non-religious items on the altar that are widely accepted across cultures and time. This area will feature animal cards, flowers, crystals, and various calming icons and elements. The DJ invests a lot of time and energy into crafting a carefully curated setlist. Intentionality is crucial in creating a playlist that is mindful and considerate. The music will avoid profanity and feature very few, if any, English lyrics. A trained professional in the field of conscious movement will offer a set with an adventurous arc, a steady rise and fall of beats per minute, and space to ebb and flow, subtly guiding participants in and out of what may become a very deep experience.
