About Lection

Lection noun archaic 1. a version of a passage in a particular copy or edition of a text; a variant reading. A public reading event. Each reader must bring their own reading material. The reading should come from a book that galvanized, or changed them. It could be as simple as a change for only a moment, eliciting laughter or tears or solemn repose. It can be any genre, fiction or non fiction. Gothic, religious, outrageous, comedic, melancholy, erotic, or poetic, no topic will be turned away. We ask only that you be respectful of the audience, avoiding any thing obscene or pornographic. Do not ask what is deemed as such, we will expect you to defer to the words or Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart. "I know it when I see it." When signing in, readers will be given a number. The numbers will be called to read in random order. There will be a maximum of 12 readers per event. Each reader will be given 2 minutes 37 seconds to read. They will not introduce themselves. They will not give the title, author, or any description of the material. The material, even if it has photos or art to accompany it, must only be read aloud. No other visual will be used. They will choose a passage, and simply ... read. At the end of the readings, the audience will be given a few minutes to vote and select one reader from the 12. That reader will then be given 5 more minutes to read from the same material, but able to start any where in the reading. After completing the reading that reader will introduce themselves, give the title of the book, and it's author. All other readers will then be asked by number to do the same.
