Follow Insula CollectiveEmbarking on a lifelong journey managing severe treatment-resistant depression and various mental health diagnoses, I count myself fortunate to have had access to crucial mental health resources and unwavering support from my mother. Losing family members to suicide, my father in particular, shaped the world I live in and made me sensitive to the difficult emotions we often experience. My personal struggles have illuminated the stark disparities within the mental health care system, especially for individuals who, like me, are part of the black community. These inequities ignited my commitment to fostering greater wellness and building a supportive mental health community specifically tailored to those who have often been underserved. In 2022, I experienced group therapy for the first time. The experience was transformative, revealing the profound impact of mental health support groups especially those tailored to people of color. Recognizing a pressing need for more accessible and inclusive safe spaces, I took a decisive step in becoming a certified peer support specialist in the state of California. This certification empowers me to bridge the gaps in care, offering support and understanding to those who may have previously felt overlooked or neglected within the mental health landscape. My mission is to break down the barriers that hinder mental health care within the BIPOC community, advocating for greater accessibility and inclusivity. By sharing my journey and becoming a certified peer support specialist, I aim to create spaces where individuals can find solace, share their experiences, and embark on a collective journey toward holistic well-being. Join me in cultivating a supportive environment that encourages growth, healing, and empowerment.
