The Engineering Music Society is based in the University of Melbourne, Parkville. Whilst affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering, the society is in no way limited to engineering students - we have members from all faculties, staff, students from other universities, high school students, and even people who have absolutely nothing to do with the uni. The club currently supports an orchestra, concert band, two stage bands, a jazz choir, and a variety of small chamber ensembles. We hold spectacular public concerts at the end of each semester, and also play at several university and industry functions throughout the year. All ensembles rehearse weekly, usually for a couple of hours in the evening (from 5:45pm). We also hold a rehearsal camp over a weekend every semester. For semester 1, 2012, our rehearsal schedule is as follows: Orchestra - Monday 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm Room D207, Engineering Monday Stage Band - Monday 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm Room D310, Engineering Choir - Tuesday 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm Room D207, Engineering Concert Band - Wednesday 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm Room D207, Engineering Wednesday Stage Band - Wednesday 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm Room D310, Engineering EMS also takes pride in its strong social aspect, including "beer and freddos" nights, BBQs, visits to the Corkman pub after rehearsals, and enthusiastic involvement in Melbourne Uni's Prosh Week. Numerous social events such as cycling expeditions, hikes, ski trips and brewery or winery tours are organised throughout the year, not to mention parties and group tables at fundraisers and balls, namely Melbourne Uni Science Ball. Camp is the highlight of the semester for many, with rehearsal during the day and the evenings reserved for trivia, games, and a good time to be had by all. Being a student-run club, we get to make all (or most of) the decisions. This means we end up playing all sorts of music - from classical symphonies to movie soundtracks to silly little fun pieces. If you have any suggestions or requests, speak up! If you're interested in joining an ensemble, drop by our office and speak to a friendly committee member, or simply turn up to the rehearsal and introduce yourself! There will be someone from EMS in the office from 9am until 6pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. They are there to answer any questions, sell you tickets for concerts, and also look after the instruments in the storage space that we provide for our members.
